Turkmenistan and the USA Explore New Areas of Cooperation as Ashgabat Hosts U.S. Senator Steve Daines

President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov held talks with U.S. Senator Steve Daines, during which the two sides discussed prospects for expanding bilateral cooperation in the political, economic, and humanitarian spheres. Particular attention was given to collaboration in the fields of energy, trade, investment, and interparliamentary relations.
President Berdimuhamedov reaffirmed Turkmenistan’s commitment to developing a constructive dialogue with the United States based on the principles of mutual respect and equal partnership. Senator Daines, in turn, emphasized the U.S. interest in strengthening cooperation with Turkmenistan and highlighted the considerable potential for expanding collaboration in a number of areas of mutual interest.

Economic issues featured prominently on the agenda. The two sides discussed opportunities to enhance trade and economic ties, strengthen contacts between the business communities of both countries, and explore prospects for implementing joint projects. For Turkmenistan, which possesses some of the world’s largest natural gas reserves, energy cooperation has traditionally remained one of the key pillars of its international engagement.
The meeting comes amid a noticeable increase in Ashgabat’s diplomatic activity. In recent years, Turkmenistan has consistently expanded its dialogue not only with the countries of Central Asia, Russia, China, and Turkiye, but has also sought to deepen engagement with Western partners while adhering to its constitutionally enshrined policy of permanent neutrality. The country’s foreign policy is aimed at maintaining balanced relations with major international actors and promoting broad multilateral cooperation.
Despite continuing differences in approaches to certain international issues, both sides have demonstrated an interest in identifying practical areas for cooperation. Economic partnership, investment, and the expansion of business ties are currently viewed as the most promising avenues for the further development of relations between Turkmenistan and the United States.
Experts note that Washington’s interest in Central Asia has grown significantly in recent years. In addition to regional security, increasing attention is being paid to energy security, the development of transport and logistics corridors across the Caspian region, the digital economy, and stronger economic partnerships with the countries of the region. In this context, Turkmenistan is regarded as an important participant in the regional energy landscape due to its substantial natural gas reserves and strategic geographic location.
Political analysts believe that Senator Daines’ visit does not represent a fundamental shift in U.S.–Turkmen relations. However, it may serve as another indication of both sides’ willingness to maintain regular political dialogue. Such high-level contacts could help create favorable conditions for expanding cooperation in trade, education, environmental protection, digital technologies, and investment.
