One Year After Washington Summit, Pashinyan and Aliyev Discuss Next Steps

On August 8, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan held a phone conversation with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. The call was initiated by the Armenian side, according to the Armenian government’s press service.

The conversation took place exactly one year after the Washington summit of August 8, 2025, during which Armenia and Azerbaijan, with the participation of U.S. President Donald Trump, announced significant progress toward a peace agreement.

According to statements from both sides, Pashinyan and Aliyev discussed the results achieved over the past year, as well as further steps to implement the agreements reached.

The transportation component of the peace process is particularly important in the current context. According to the Azerbaijani side, the leaders discussed the implementation of the TRIPP project, which envisages developing transport links between Azerbaijan and Nakhchivan through Armenian territory.

The phone conversation took place amid intensified contacts between Yerevan, Baku and Washington. On the same day, Pashinyan held a separate phone conversation with Trump, during which they discussed the state of the peace process and the implementation of TRIPP.

The fact that Pashinyan and Aliyev held direct contact one year after the Washington meeting is politically significant. It shows that the two sides continue to maintain direct communication at the highest level even as the peace process moves from negotiations toward the practical implementation of the agreements reached.

At the same time, key issues remain the finalization and ratification of the peace agreement, implementation of transport arrangements, and further institutionalization of relations between the two countries.

The phone conversation also demonstrates a shift in the nature of Armenian-Azerbaijani dialogue. Whereas the focus had previously been primarily on ending the conflict and agreeing on the principles of a peace agreement, the practical implementation of agreements, transport infrastructure and regional economic connectivity are now becoming increasingly important.
