On September 22, Bulgaria celebrates Independence Day, one of the key dates in the country’s modern history. The main celebrations are taking place in Veliko Tarnovo, where the historic Manifesto declaring Bulgaria’s independence was proclaimed in 1908.

 

Today, Bulgaria marks the 118th anniversary of the proclamation of its independence. Celebrations are being held across the country, while Veliko Tarnovo has traditionally become the main venue, reflecting the city’s direct connection to the historic events of September 22, 1908. On that day, Prince Ferdinand read the Manifesto declaring Bulgaria’s independence in the presence of the government led by Prime Minister Alexander Malinov.

The official programme in Veliko Tarnovo began with a liturgy at the historic Church of the Holy Forty Martyrs, followed by a reenactment of the proclamation of independence. A military ceremony marking the raising of the national flag was held at Tsarevets Fortress, followed by the laying of wreaths and flowers and a ceremonial procession through the city center.

Representatives of Bulgaria’s state institutions and armed forces are taking part in the main ceremonies. The official programme will culminate in the evening with a ceremonial military tattoo at Tsar Asen I Square, one of the central events marking the anniversary.

The celebrations also feature an international cultural component. Veliko Tarnovo is hosting the 19th International Military Bands Festival, with ensembles from Bulgaria, the United States and Turkiye taking part. The musicians are participating in the festive procession and concerts, adding an international dimension to the national celebrations.

Security measures have been strengthened in the city because of the scale of the events. Special security zones, visitor screening procedures and temporary traffic restrictions have been introduced. Drone flights have also been prohibited in designated areas during the main ceremonies.

Celebrations are taking place in other Bulgarian cities as well. In Varna, the programme includes a military ceremony for the raising of the national flag and a commemorative religious service, while official ceremonies involving local authorities and military personnel are being held in other parts of the country.

 

Independence Day remains an important part of Bulgaria’s historical and civic identity. The 118th anniversary brings together state institutions, the armed forces, cultural organisations and citizens across the country, commemorating the events of 1908 that established Bulgaria’s status as an independent state on the international stage.
