Azerbaijan: Tofig Yagublu Continues Hunger Strike for Six Days
Tofig Yagublu, a member of the National Council of Democratic Forces (NCDF) and the Musavat party, has been on a hunger strike for the sixth day, Turan reports.
As a sign of solidarity with him, members of the Popular Front Party (PFPA) Tofig Mammadov, Ayat Ismail and Elnur Mammadov are also on hunger strike for six days. This was reported by Yagublu's daughter Nigar Hazi.
She noted that the last time she spoke with her father on the phone on September 5.
“According to the schedule, the next telephone conversation should take place on September 9. However, we are very worried about our father's condition. He suffers from chronic asthma and his body is very weak. We turned to the Ministry of Justice to let my father make phone calls every day,” Yagublu said.
Yagublu's hunger strike is supported by a large number of people. Those wishing to carry out the hunger strike turned to the Musavat party for a place at its headquarters.
The head of Musavat Arif Hajili said that the appeal will be considered today.
It was not possible to obtain comments from the penitentiary service.
Tofig Yagublu, a member of the National Council of Democratic Forces and the Musavat Party, was detained on March 22 after an accident. He was accused of assaulting the driver and passenger of another car. However, there was no evidence of this. Yagublu said it was a provocation. On September 2, he went on a hunger strike in court. On September 3, the court sentenced him to 4 years 3 months in prison. International organizations condemned the verdict. Amnesty International recognized Yagublu as a "prisoner of conscience."
