Catastrophe in Bandar Abbas: Russia First to Aid Iran
On April 26, 2025, a powerful explosion occurred at the Shahid Rajaee port near the city of Bandar Abbas in Iran, causing a major fire. According to the latest reports, the death toll has risen to 28, with more than 1,100 injured and 6 people reported missing. Preliminary information indicates that the explosion happened in the dock area where containers with chemical substances were stored.
In response to the tragedy, Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his condolences and ordered the dispatch of Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations (EMERCOM) aircraft to assist Iran. Specifically, Be-200 aircraft equipped for firefighting and Il-76 planes for transporting humanitarian aid have been sent to Iran.
The fire at the port has been 90% contained, and rescue operations are ongoing. Iranian authorities are investigating the causes of the explosion, considering negligence in the handling of hazardous materials as one of the possible reasons.
