Iran and the U.S. Continue Nuclear Dialogue: Rome Hosts Fifth Round of Talks

Today, Rome becomes the
stage for the fifth round of negotiations between Iran and the United States on
a pivotal nuclear deal. As in previous rounds, Oman plays a key mediating role,
underscoring its growing diplomatic influence in resolving one of the most
pressing international issues.
According
to Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei, it was Oman that
proposed holding the talks in the neutral and symbolically significant location
of the Eternal City. Tehran, he emphasized, remains “firmly committed to
defending the sovereign right to the peaceful use of nuclear energy.”
Since the dialogue resumed in April, both sides have
navigated a complex path. The delegations are led by prominent figures: Iran is
represented by Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, while the U.S.
delegation is headed by Presidential Envoy Steve Witkoff. Despite ongoing
diplomatic efforts, the main sticking point remains unchanged — the permissible
scope and level of uranium enrichment, which continues to raise concerns among
Western allies.
Insiders note that the atmosphere in Rome is tense but
constructive. Observers do not rule out that this round may be decisive: it
could either lay the groundwork for a future agreement or mark a fundamental
breakdown in positions.
The stakes are high: the
outcome of these talks will influence not only regional stability in the Middle
East but also the broader trajectory of international efforts to prevent
nuclear proliferation.
