Armenian political club extends support to Constitutional Court amid ‘government pressures’

The public-political group Vernatun has extended solidarity and support to the members of the Constitutional Court ″amid the authorities’ attempts to force their resignation″. Describing the recently legislated early retirement scheme as an illicit instrument of blackmail “running counter to the fundamentals of a democratic country governed by rule of law”, it also warns of the imminent threats to the the Constitution - and the Armenian statehood in general, Tert.am reports.
The club also slams President Armen Sarkissian’s move to sign the controversial bill into law, highlighting his responsibility as a ″co-author of processes subordinated to the whims of a single person”.
″With the constitutional mechanisms for the separation of powers and [checks and] balances having stopped to function, the entire burden for the maintenance of the Constitution now falls upon the Armenian cirizen, each and every of us.
“In the focus of this mission today is the Constitutional Court, the [only] remaining institution not subordinated by the prime minister but besieged by the person yearning to establish himself as an autocratic [ruler].
“So we extend our support to the CC judges - Hrayr Tovmasyan, Alvina Gyulumyan, Arevik Petrosyan, Hrant Nazaryan, Ashot Khachatryan, Arayik Tunyan and Felix Tukhyan - highly appreciating their civil and dignitified position.
“That position is, by definition, an enviable example demonstrating the realization of a state-oriented thinking and responsibility for each of us,″ reads the club's statement.
