Struggle for Moscow’s Favor: Armenia and Azerbaijan in Search of Geopolitical Advantages
After years of intense confrontation, Armenia and Azerbaijan have suddenly embarked on a race to improve ties with Russia. The main goal is to secure Moscow’s support ahead of the completion of the peace process.
Both countries have confirmed the finalization of the peace treaty text, but its signing has been delayed. Azerbaijan has set preconditions, including amendments to Armenia’s Constitution and the dissolution of the OSCE Minsk Group.
However, Yerevan, taking into account Baku’s aggressive rhetoric and the risk of renewed military actions, has launched an active diplomatic campaign to restore Moscow’s trust. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced his participation in the Victory Day celebrations on May 9 in Moscow, followed shortly by Ilham Aliyev’s confirmation of his attendance.
Judging by the Kremlin’s reaction, Russia is once again becoming a key player in the Caucasus.
