Russia and Ukraine Exchange Accusations After Ceasefire Announcement

Russia and Ukraine once again accused each other of violating a ceasefire announced by Moscow for the Victory Day celebrations. Despite the Kremlin’s declaration of a two-day truce on May 8–9, fighting on several sections of the front line did not stop in practice, with both sides reporting continued artillery shelling, drone attacks, and assault operations.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry, Ukrainian forces carried out attacks throughout the day using drones and multiple-launch rocket systems. Russia claimed it intercepted hundreds of drones, including some approaching Moscow and other major cities. At the same time, authorities tightened security measures in the capital ahead of Victory Day events, while the traditional display of heavy military equipment on Red Square was significantly reduced due to the threat of attacks.

Kyiv, in turn, insists that Russia was the first to violate the ceasefire. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russian units continued offensive operations almost immediately after the truce formally came into effect. According to Ukrainian officials, more than a thousand ceasefire violations were recorded within the first hours alone, including drone strikes, air attacks, and artillery fire.

The situation highlights how even symbolic attempts at temporary ceasefires are proving ineffective under current conditions. Over recent months, Russia and Ukraine have announced several short-term pauses in fighting, including during Orthodox Easter. However, each time both sides accused one another of breaking the agreements. Analysts note that neither Moscow nor Kyiv appears prepared for a full cessation of hostilities without major political concessions, while localized “holiday ceasefires” are increasingly viewed as diplomatic and informational tools rather than genuine steps toward peace.

For the Kremlin, the current ceasefire also carried significant symbolic importance. Victory Day remains one of Russia’s most important national holidays and is traditionally marked by a large-scale display of military power. However, amid regular Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian territory, Moscow was forced for the first time in years to significantly alter the format of the celebrations and strengthen security measures.

At the diplomatic level, prospects for a settlement remain uncertain. The negotiation process has effectively stalled despite ongoing contacts between representatives of Ukraine, Russia, and the United States. Ukraine continues consultations with American mediators in an attempt to secure a broader ceasefire and additional prisoner exchanges. Nevertheless, fundamental disagreements over territory and the conditions of a possible peace agreement remain unresolved.
