The year 2025 will see the debut of Turkey's Altay tank

Turkey is preparing for a significant upgrade to its military forces with the introduction of the Altay main battle tank, which is scheduled to enter service on August 30, 2025. This tank will be the first fully domestically designed and manufactured tank, developed by the Turkish defense company BMC.
The Altay is a step toward greater defense independence for Turkey, as the tank, while incorporating some foreign technologies, is expected to reduce reliance on foreign suppliers in the future. Initially, 100 tanks will be equipped with a South Korean engine and transmission, but Turkey plans to integrate its own BATU engine for future production, which should improve the tank's overall performance.
The tank is equipped with a 120mm cannon and a fire control system that is expected to allow it to effectively engage targets on the battlefield. Its armor is made from composite materials, and the planned integration of an Active Protection System (APS) will enhance its protection against threats such as anti-tank missiles and grenades.
Altay also features reinforced armor and additional systems for urban combat, where traditional tanks might face difficulties. This version, called AHT (Asimetrik Harp Tankı), is designed for urban areas where complex terrain and dense buildings present additional challenges.
A notable feature is the Altay T3 version with a remotely controlled turret. This design reduces risks to the crew and integrates more advanced communication and coordination systems, which should improve battlefield efficiency and real-time information sharing.
Beyond its military significance, the Altay is of interest for the international defense market. With growing demand for modern armored vehicles in regions like the Middle East and Africa, the Altay may attract potential buyers due to its reasonable price and improved capabilities.
Turkey plans to acquire at least 1,000 Altay tanks, which will help strengthen its military position in the region. These tanks will be used in both conventional and asymmetric conflicts, providing an advantage on the battlefield.
In the future, the Altay could undergo upgrades, including the integration of unmanned ground vehicles and autonomous systems, helping Turkey maintain competitiveness in the rapidly changing world of military technology.
The Altay is an important step for Turkey in defense, but its success will depend on further development and improvements. Given technological advancements and changes in the defense industry, this tank may become a key element in Turkey's military planning and have export potential on the international market.
