Thermal power plant opens in Gardabani, south-east Georgia
A 230-megawatt thermal power plant has begun operating in Gardabani, in Georgian south-eastern region of Kvemo Kartli earlier today, Agenda.ge reports, with Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia and Economy Minister Natia Turnava stating that the "project is large-scale and very important for the state energy security."
"This thermal power plant will make a significant contribution to the country's energy security and significantly reduce imports of electricity into the country”, said General Director of the Georgian Oil and Gas Corporation Givi Bakhtadze.
Bakhtadze noted that 450 local citizens were employed in the construction of the thermal power plant, while 200 permanent jobs in total will be created at the plant.
"From 2012 to 2019, 1,000,100,000 megawatt electricity has been added to our power system, which is critically important…Georgia should become a very important and stable country in the field of energy transit”, said Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia.
The total cost of the project was $190 million, and was financed by the Georgian Oil and Gas Corporation.
Gardabani Thermal Power Plant 2 will generate about 1.3 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity per year.
The building process started in February 2018 and ended in December 2019.
Construction work was carried out by Chinese construction engineering company China Tianchen Engineering Corporation (TCC).
