Erdogan considers US sanctions over S-400 systems disrespectful
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that the US sanctions against Turkey over the purchase of Russian S-400 air defense systems manifest disrespect for an important NATO partner.
Turkey is a NATO country, and the US is also a NATO country. Turkey is one of the five most important countries of the alliance, so it is not an ordinary country. If earlier Mr. Trump or [former US President Barack] Obama proudly said that there is such a country as Turkey in NATO, now the US is using CAATSA (Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act) against Turkey. This is disrespect for an essential NATO partner, the Turkish leader told reporters on board his plane while returning from Azerbaijan.
Erdogan’s statement came against the background of the Wall Street Journal report. Journalists claim that the US may announce sanctions against Turkey over the purchase of Russian weapons.
NEWS.ru earlier reported that the US was going to impose sanctions on Turkey over its acquisition last year of Russian S-400 air defense systems.
