Independence Day being celebrated in Georgia

Today Georgian people celebrate Independence Day, commemorating May 26, 1918 – the day when the Act of Independence was adopted and which established the First Democratic Republic of Georgia.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, no large-scale events will take place around the country.
On May 26, 1918, Georgia's first democratic government led by Noe Zhordania proclaimed the country's independence.
After being a part of the former Soviet Union, the country regained its sovereignty on April 9, 1991.
The remains of Georgia's national hero and commander-in-chief of the first Democratic Republic of Georgia, General Giorgi Kvinitadze, have been returned from France to Georgia last week.
The official ceremony to commemorate the Georgian General, who died in emigration, was held at the Tbilisi International Airport. The memorial service of General Kvinitadze will be held at Trinity Cathedral in Tbilisi on May 26. Upon the decision of the Government of Georgia his remains will be laid to rest at the Mtatsminda Pantheon of Writers and Public Figures in the Georgian capital of Tbilisi on Independence Day on May 26.
