Russia MFA: No need to endow Russian peacekeepers in Karabakh with UN mandate

There is no need to endow the Russian peacekeepers in Nagorno-Karabakh with a UN mandate, and Azerbaijan and Armenia agree with and support the way they work. Pyotr Ilyichev, Director of the Department of International Organizations of the Russian foreign ministry, told this to RIA Novosti.
"The only guarantor of maintaining stability in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone is the Russian peacekeeping contingent, which does not need to be given a UN mandate because the methods of our peacekeepers' activities are already clearly defined in the first tripartite agreement: statement of the leaders of Russia, Azerbaijan, and Armenia on November 9, 2020. In this regard, there is a consensus among the participants of the dispute, and this fact is key here," said Ilyichev.
According to him, it should be especially noted that "the activities of Russian peacekeepers are supported both in Baku and Yerevan, which is of key importance in the context of the uncertainty of the final status of the [Karabakh] territory."
