Russia and Iran agree to boost North-South corridor

Issues of bilateral cooperation, including the development of the North-South international transport corridor, were the focus of talks between Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council of Iran Ali Shamkhani and visiting Russian presidential aide Igor Levitin, IRNA reported.
According to the agency, the sides exchanged views on the implementation of bilateral economic cooperation agreements and paid special attention to the necessity of invigorating work on the projects linked with the development of the North-South corridor.
It recalled that Levitin’s visit to Tehran this January had yielded an agreement on the use of Russian investments to build the corridor’s railway section linking the cities of Rasht and Astara.
Shamkhani stressed that the construction of the transport corridor and the expansion of Iranian-Russian transport cooperation "is a major component of joint projects."
"Any obstacles on the path of the implementation of the decisions of the two country’s leadership linked with this strategic project, which plays a key role in the change of the cargo transit system in the region, must be removes as soon as possible," the agency quoted him as saying.
United opposition to Western sanctions
A top Iranian security official said that reducing the dollar's influence on regional and international trade will minimize the West's domination over the global economy.
For his part, Levitin said Moscow is ready to make investments in different Iranian economic sectors, including those pertaining to the steel, oil and petrochemical industries.
Commenting on the numerous bilateral visits by the two countries' economic and banking officials over the past months, he said favorable ground has been prepared for signing multilateral economic deals and attracting other countries to participate in the lucrative economic projects.
