Azerbaijani MP Denied Entry to Russia: Baku Outraged and Demands Explanation

A diplomatic incident unfolded at a Moscow airport when Azerbaijani MP Azer Badamov, who arrived as part of an official delegation, was detained and deported back to Baku. According to Azerbaijan's Foreign Ministry, Russia did not provide any prior warning about the entry ban, despite the visit being organized at the invitation of the Russian side.
Badamov was en route to Russia's Astrakhan Region to attend an event commemorating the birthday of Heydar Aliyev. However, during a layover in Moscow, he was unexpectedly denied entry. Officials in Baku described the move as unfriendly and called on Moscow to provide a formal explanation. As of now, the Russian Foreign Ministry has not commented on the matter.
It's worth noting that Azer Badamov is a member of the ruling “New Azerbaijan” Party. He serves as the Deputy Chairman of the Committee on Economic Policy, Industry, and Entrepreneurship, is a member of the Agrarian Policy Committee, the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly, and the Interparliamentary Commission on Cooperation between the Milli Majlis and the Federal Assembly of Russia, according to the Azerbaijani parliament's website.
This incident could further strain already tense relations between Russia and Azerbaijan, which have been deteriorating since the crash of an AZAL aircraft in December 2024.
