Clash of Statements Between Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky

On June 6, 2025, former U.S. President Donald Trump made a bold statement during a broadcast on an American TV channel. He commented on the recent massive air and missile strikes carried out by Russia against Ukraine, accusing the Ukrainian leadership of provoking the attacks.
"Ukraine gave Russia a reason to bomb them to hell. The actions they’re taking provoke a response, and we’re seeing what that response can look like," Trump said.
This statement sparked outrage among Ukrainian politicians as well as the international community. His words were perceived as an attempt to shift responsibility for Russian aggression onto the Ukrainian side.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky did not remain silent and issued a sharp response to Trump’s remarks. He stated that Ukraine is a sovereign state fighting for its survival and that it is not a “child” in relations with Russia, to be told what it can or cannot do.
"We are not a child that someone should tell what we can or cannot do. Ukraine is defending itself from terrorism, and no politician — not even a former leader of a major country — has the right to dispute that," Zelensky said.
Zelensky also added that such statements play into the hands of the Kremlin and undermine international support for Ukraine.
This clash of opinions occurred amid an escalation in hostilities: Russia launched massive attacks on Ukrainian cities, resulting in civilian casualties and the destruction of critical infrastructure.
