Russia Deploys New Geran-3 Drones, Ukraine Seeks Asymmetric Response

Russia has begun using new Geran-3 drones in its war against Ukraine, an upgraded version of the already familiar “Shaheds”. According to Ukrainian military reports, these drones are faster, more difficult to intercept with air defenses, and equipped with navigation systems resistant to electronic warfare.
In response, Ukraine is forced to adapt quickly:
reconnaissance and strike FPV drones
are being deployed as interceptors, attacking the Gerans in the air with small
explosive charges. This approach creates a new level of aerial confrontation,
where drones fight against drones.
The emergence of the Geran-3 confirms that Russia continues
to develop cheap yet effective means of pressuring Ukraine’s energy
infrastructure. Their speed and resilience to electronic countermeasures make
older defensive methods less effective.
The use of FPV interceptors is a necessary but tactical measure. It is cheaper and faster than expending
expensive air-defense missiles on mass drone attacks, but it does not provide a
systemic solution.
If the Geran-3s are indeed faster and more resistant to electronic warfare, strikes on Ukraine’s energy system could become even more destructive. Combined with gas shortages, this may increase pressure on the Ukrainian population and economy during the winter period.
