Russia army General Staff chief: Western countries are trying to draw Armenia into their sphere of influence

The situation in the Caucasus remains complicated, and extra-regional players, such as the US and the European Union, have a destructive influence on its development, This was stated by the Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, Valery Gerasimov, at a briefing for the military attachés of foreign countries.
"The desire of extra-regional players—first of all, the US and the European Union—to strengthen their positions in the region, to keep Georgia and to draw Armenia into their sphere of influence, has a destructive effect on its development. The West seeks to destabilize the situation," said the chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces.
According to Gerasimov, Russia, however, is taking constructive steps in this region.
