Pashinyan and Erdoghan Discuss Bilateral Relations: Peace in the South Caucasus Still at Risk

    On June 5, 2025, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoghan held a telephone conversation. The main topic was the normalization of Armenian-Turkish relations and the overall situation in the South Caucasus region.

    The contact was part of an ongoing diplomatic dialogue launched in previous months, focused on reopening borders, restoring economic ties, and reducing tensions following the Second Nagorno-Karabakh War and subsequent incidents.

    Following the conversation, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan stated that despite progress in negotiations and certain diplomatic achievements, the risk of escalation in the region remains high. He emphasized that stability depends on the goodwill of all parties involved, including Turkey, Azerbaijan, and international mediators. Mirzoyan also hinted at unresolved issues such as:

    • The legal status of the Armenia-Azerbaijan border;
    • The future of the Armenian population in Nagorno-Karabakh;
    • The presence of Russian peacekeepers;
    • Potential steps for unblocking regional transport corridors.

    Official Ankara has not released a detailed statement yet, but in the past, Turkey has repeatedly stressed that normalization with Armenia cannot be considered separately from Azerbaijan's position—making the process vulnerable to external political disruptions.

    This marks the second direct contact between Pashinyan and Erdoghan in the past six months, highlighting a shared interest in regional stabilization.
