President of Armenia Vahagn Khachaturyan: “We need peace — this is a new chapter in history”

In an interview with the influential Spanish outlet El
País, the President of Armenia, Vahagn Khachaturyan, made one of the
clearest and most hopeful statements in recent years: Armenia is ready to sign
a peace agreement with Azerbaijan “without
preconditions.” This declaration reflects a mature expression of state
will and a desire to open a new chapter in the fate of the country and the
entire South Caucasus.
"We need peace. We are ready to sign the agreement, and I hope that Azerbaijan will also take this step", the President stated.
The President emphasized that the foundation of the
agreement lies in mutual recognition of
territorial integrity, made possible thanks to the efforts of diplomats,
the support of international partners, and the resilience of Armenian society.
This is not just about a document — it is about a transition
from a war-torn past to a peaceful future, where neighboring countries are no
longer seen as threats, but as opportunities.
President Khachaturyan specifically highlighted the strengthening of ties with the European
Union and the United States, calling them “natural allies” in the process
of building a democratic and open society. He clarified that this does not mean
a sharp break with traditional partners, including Russia, but rather signals a
more diversified and sovereign foreign
policy course from Yerevan.
A significant part of the discussion was devoted to the possible restoration of diplomatic
relations with Turkey and the opening of borders. The President
expressed cautious optimism, stressing that such steps could contribute to
regional stability and economic growth.
"We are open to dialogue. This is our choice, and it is driven by the interests of the people", Khachaturyan noted.
The President also addressed internal challenges. He
expressed support for government actions to maintain stability amid recent
attempts at political destabilization. In his view, any form of
religious-political radicalism that threatens democracy will not be tolerated.
President Khachaturyan demonstrated not only political
foresight but also human sincerity, speaking about the pain of the past and the
need to leave it behind. His stance reflects the maturity of a nation ready to
move forward — toward peace, development, and international recognition.
Thus, today Armenia stands on the threshold of a new stage in its history.
