Russia MFA: Russian border guards’ presence should be considered when opening communications via Armenia’s Syunik

The presence of Russian border guards should be taken into account when unblocking road communication routes through Syunik Province of Armenia. This was stated by Alexey Fadeev, Deputy Director of the Information and Press Department of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), during a press briefing—and commenting on the trilateral declaration signed by the leaders of Armenia, the United States, and Azerbaijan on August 8 in Washington DC..

“Russia considers the trilateral agreements by the leaders of Russia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan between 2020 and [20]22 to be relevant, since none of the parties has announced its withdrawal from these agreements. The Russian foreign ministry and the leadership have repeatedly stated that Moscow is ready to assist partners in normalizing of relations.

As we had noted earlier, the engagement of extra-regional forces in the South Caucasus should promote the peace agenda, and not create new problems and dividing lines.

We also noted that it is necessary to take into account Armenia’s membership in the EAEU and the presence of Russian border guards in Syunik Province. We believe that this should be taken into account when developing the details of the project,” Fadeev said.

He added that as for the “Trump Road” via Syunik, the Russian foreign ministry has reserved its opinion until this project’s details—which have not yet been publicized—have been studied.
