Ukrainian Armed Forces Shoot Down Russian “Mother Drone” Carrying FPV Drones
The Ukrainian Armed Forces have for the first time shot down
an unusual Russian reconnaissance UAV “Orlan”, which carried two FPV drones
mounted under its wings. The news was reported by Ukraine’s 118th Separate
Mechanized Brigade on Facebook, which also published photos of the downed
aircraft with the FPV devices clearly visible.
Previously, Ukrainian units had destroyed “Orlan”, “Zala”,
and “Supercam” drones – but only in their standard reconnaissance versions.
This marks the first confirmed case of destroying a modified “Orlan-mother”
used as a carrier platform for FPV drones.
In the released photos, two FPV drones can be seen fixed
under the Orlan’s wings. Most likely, they are models with a diameter of 10-13
inches. Whether they were equipped with combat payloads remains unknown.
Such a modification indicates new strategic objectives –
extending the operational range of FPV drones by transporting them over long
distances with a carrier UAV.
Germany is currently developing a similar drone carrier, the
“Sparta”, for Ukraine. It will
be capable of transporting two FPV drones over a distance of up to 200 km.
This case is a vivid example of how war stimulates innovation and adaptation. Russia is being pushed to develop hybrid platforms, where reconnaissance drones also serve as transport bases for FPV drones. Ukraine, in turn, demonstrates the ability not only to defend itself but also to create counter-technologies, maintaining battlefield effectiveness. This is a clear example of the technological race within the conflict, where every maneuver on the ground requires innovative solutions in the sky.
